Equine Staff Profiles
Christine Bailey
Originally a student of Warwickshire College, Christine was drawn back to the College to assist with the showing and breeding operation. She then progressed into the lecturing field, specialising in sports therapy, gaining vast experience in hydrotherapy, therapeutic machines and rehabilitation. She has a wealth of experience tutoring all levels of FE students, and is at present the course tutor for the Horse Management courses.
Dr Tanya Carey
Tanya joined our equine team in 1999 after completing her PhD at Liverpool University. She is currently working as a lecturer and post-doctoral researcher in equine sport science. Areas of current research interest include exercise physiology, gait analysis, biomechanics and training to reduce injury risk in performance horses. Previously Tanya worked as a volunteer animal nurse and at a riding stable teaching disabled children. Tanya has recently been involved in writing a CD-Rom in equine anatomy.
Julie Ellis
Julie has an MSc in Equine Studies which was sponsored by Dengie to undertake a research project on protein, at Edinburgh Veterinary School. Julie runs the weighing project sponsored by Dodson & Horrell resulting in the development of new weigh tapes and papers published in the Veterinary Record. Her paper on ‘An improved estimator Of Equine Bodyweight’ was accepted for presentation at the prestigious British Equine Veterinary Associations Congress.
Richard Pearce
Richard is an animal ecologist, specialising in entomology, microbiology and the zoology of large animals. He is passionate about science in general and the natural sciences in particular. He has both participated in and led expeditions to the African bush and is interested in the practicalities of conducting experimental work in the field, specifically the concept of the field laboratory. Research interests include parasite ecology; equine microbiology and the relationship between function and morphology of species.
Richard Bacon
As Curriculum Leader Richard is responsible for making sure that all courses
run smoothly. He also teaches business management to equine courses: something he is uniquely qualified to do. He has an MBA in business, has done extensive research into horse business performance, published books on the subject, been a speaker at conferences arranged by leading equine organisations, and provided consultancy advice to a range of businesses. On top of this, Richard also does course development and verification work for the main exam boards so he knows what the latest standards and developments are!
Sue Coombs
Prior to joining the college, Sue has worked in three Olympic level dressage yards, schooled several horses at the Grand Prix and has competed at Prix St George and Inter II in dressage, and discovery level showjumping. She has extensive knowledge of the care and travelling of topclass competition horses, and has since built an extensive client base teaching all ages and abilities. She has achieved her BHSII and is aiming for ‘I’ status this year!
Clifford Mitchell
One of Moreton Morrell’s longest serving members of staff, Clifford started working here in 1971. He has worked hard to develop the first undergraduate degree in equine and now co-ordinates all the higher education courses. Outside of College Clifford been an external examiner for equine degree, foundation degree and BTEC courses. His interests include horseracing (he says he is interested, but not very knowledgeable as bookmaker will confirm!), golf (to support the golf ball manufacturing industry), theatre, classical music, and cooking.
Liz Fellows
As a BHSI and experienced trainer, Liz has been a competitor and coach of young student riders, competition riders and horses for many years.
She competes regularly on her own horses with success in British Dressage competitions. She is currently the holder of the National Title, ‘Medium Restricted Champion’ achieved at the Winter Dressage Championships 2007 with her horse Masquerade V.
Laura Stewart
Originally a Warwickshire College equine student, Laura has now worked for the college for 5 years, and is currently the Senior Industrial Training Manager. She is responsible for industry experience across the land-based faculty. Laura and her horse Penchwintan Cadfridog (Caddy) have had considerable showing success at many levels and last year she was awarded the Reserve Champion Ridden Stallion at the Royal Welsh Show. In her spare time she rides and competes and has started a small Welsh Cob stud in North Wales.
